Connecting stated goals and participatory process to progress on ecosystem accounting

Overview

Countries are taking steps to implement national ecosystem service accounts with the aim of accounting for natural capital in a manner that can be integrated with existing national statistics such as GDP. The degree of implementation varies among countries, and it is evident that nations are already adopting different approaches, prioritizing certain ecosystem services or types over others. This project utilizes twelve UN member states as case studies to investigate the variations in the implementation of a new global standard for ecosystem accounting, known as the United Nations Statistics Division's System of Environmental Accounts – Ecosystem Accounts. There exist connections between the stated objectives, involvement of stakeholders and rights holders, and the ongoing development of these accounts.
